No polished pitch needed · No payment until you choose to book
We design around your week: a scoped service, a clear buyer, and an operating setup that does not assume you have a team.
You still get a real launch—brand, website, payments or booking—so the business can take customers rather than sit unfinished. Idea or no idea: we start from what you have.
Side hustle language is what people type. This page is the employment constraint: contract, energy, and a model that does not require daytime availability you do not have. IR35 questions for contractors are a different page.
While employed, the scarce resource is not ambition. It is a clean two-hour block after a full day, plus a contract that may already have opinions about what you do with it. A side business while employed lives or dies on those two facts. Models that need weekday midday calls, same-day site visits, or Slack during your employer’s core hours are not side businesses. They are stealth resignations. We design as if you will still be employed in six months, because most people here will be. If the only version that works requires you to quit, we will say so before you buy a build.
The second constraint is energy, not clock time. A 7pm–9pm window on paper is not a 7pm–9pm window after a difficult commute and a household. Delivery has to survive a bad Tuesday. That usually means asynchronous intake, a tightly bounded package, and no promise of instant replies. What not to do: copy a full-time freelancer’s calendar and squeeze it into evenings. What not to do: use the employer laptop, the employer Slack, or the employer’s clients ‘just to get started’. The Launch Plan maps the week you actually have. The build then matches it. Income stays an ambition.
Employed, and still able to launch
Most clients keep their job. The constraint is time, not ambition. We will not design a business that only works if you resign next month.
Check the boring constraints first
Employment contract, confidential information, and conflicts. We are not your employment lawyer. We will still refuse a model that copies your employer’s offer or assumes you can take calls at 11am.
Build, then operate in the hours you have
We build the customer-facing business. You deliver the offer. Typically 4–6 weeks after direction is approved.
Employment contracts and a side business
Read the moonlighting, confidentiality and intellectual-property clauses before you name a buyer. Some contracts forbid competing. Some require written consent. Some are silent. We are not your employment lawyer and we will not interpret a clause as if we were. We will still refuse a model that sells the same product to the same accounts. Bring the constraint into the Launch Plan as a fact, the way you would bring a budget. A beautiful offer that gets you a disciplinary is not extra income. It is a career event.
Worked situation: a software analyst wants to sell ‘process mapping’ to firms in the same sector her employer serves. That is a red flag even if the clause is vague. The cleaner side business is a training sprint for a different sector, or a template product that never touches her employer’s data. Do not ‘keep it quiet and see’. Quiet is not a strategy. Either the contract allows a non-competing vehicle, or you wait, or you take legal advice and then decide. We build the vehicle. We do not hide it for you.
The 7pm-to-9pm operating window
Most employed side businesses that survive are run in a short evening window plus a slice of weekend. That window cannot host open-ended discovery calls, emergency Slack, or six-week strategy retainers. It can host a diagnostic with a fixed agenda, a marked-up artefact, and a booking page that captures the brief while you are at work. Design the buyer’s journey so they do the waiting, not you. If they need you live at 11am, they are not your buyer yet—or the package is wrong.
What not to do: offer ‘hop on a call whenever’. You will either fail the day job or fail the client. Publish hours. Use a scheduler that only shows employed-safe slots. Put the price and the deliverable on the page so the 7pm call is a close, not a first explanation. We build that journey on purpose. Typically four to six weeks after direction is approved, you should have a presence that respects the window. You will still be the person who shows up inside it.
What not to borrow from your employer
Do not borrow the laptop, the Adobe seat, the CRM export, the slide master, or the WhatsApp group of clients. Do not borrow the reputation as if it were portable: ‘as seen at [employer]’ is a legal and ethical mess. Buy or subscribe to your own tools. Write your own method in your own words. If the method only exists as an internal playbook, you do not yet have a side business. You have a memory of someone else’s process. The Launch Plan should expose that gap early.
Also do not borrow time that is not yours: answering enquiries from the office floor, taking a ‘quick call’ in a meeting-room gap, or posting from the work phone. That is how people get caught and how work quality drops on both sides. A side business while employed has to be boringly separate. Separate devices if you can. Separate calendar. Separate payment account in due course. We will not set up your bookkeeping. We will not pretend a blended life is clever. It is how side businesses get killed.
Energy, not hours, as the real constraint while employed
Hours can look fine on a spreadsheet and still be unusable. Night shifts, caring, a long commute, and a job that already takes evenings will eat a side business faster than a tight contract clause. Be honest about the weeks you are already empty. Those weeks should shape the package: fewer live sessions, more written delivery, harder intake filters. A ‘simple’ coaching offer that needs you warm and charming four nights a week will fail if you are already spent. A document-heavy audit might not.
Do not use caffeine and guilt as the operating plan. If energy is the constraint, reduce live contact, raise the price, and narrow the buyer until the math of a tired Thursday still works. If it never works, do not launch. Saving the fee is better than launching a vehicle you will abandon in March. We would rather send you away from the £295 session with a no than build you a 7pm business you cannot staff. Additional income is the aim. Exhaustion is not a milestone.
Who this is for
- Full-time employees exploring a business in spare hours
- People who need a realistic scope, not a five-day-a-week startup
What you leave with
A scoped extra-income business designed for employed hours—not a startup plan that only works if you resign.
One-to-one with the founder. Start with an idea — or with none. Typically 4–6 weeks after direction is approved. Income goals are ambitions, not guarantees. We help you build a credible business ready to reach customers—not promise specific earnings.
Common questions
Can I start a side business while employed if my contract is strict?
Only if the work is allowed and not a clone of your employer’s. Read the clauses; take legal advice if they are unclear. We design a non-competing vehicle. We are not your employment solicitor and we do not guarantee income.
How many hours does a side business while employed actually take?
Enough to deliver a bounded package, not enough to copy a full-time freelancer’s calendar. We scope for a 7pm-to-9pm window while employed. If the model needs daytime availability you do not have, we will say so rather than pretend it fits.
Should I tell my employer about a side business while employed?
Follow the contract and any consent rules. Some UK workplaces require written disclosure. We will not draft that conversation or interpret the clause as lawyers. We will refuse a side-business direction that depends on hiding competing work from your employer.
