No polished pitch needed · No payment until you choose to book
Most new consultancies fail on positioning: too broad, too close to the former employer, or priced like a job rather than an outcome.
We help you choose a narrow client and problem, shape a priced offer you can deliver alongside work if needed, then build the brand, website, enquiry or payment journey so you can take clients. Typically 4–6 weeks after direction is approved.
A consultancy sells diagnosis and counsel to a defined client, usually an organisation or a senior buyer, for a scoped problem. It is not a job title, a LinkedIn headline, or a brochure website that says ‘strategy’. Starting a consultancy means choosing a narrow client and problem, pricing an outcome rather than a disguised salary, and putting a journey in front of people who can hire you. Most new consultancies fail on positioning: too broad, too close to the former employer, or priced like a contractor filling a seat. The Launch Plan at £295 is where we nail the offer. If you continue within 14 days, the build is £2,495 with that fee credited. Typical delivery is four to six weeks after approval. Extra income is the aim. It is not a pipeline guarantee.
Consultancy is a different delivery model from coaching, from an agency, and from an online course. You advise and often design; you do not primarily change someone’s weekly behaviour in sessions, produce a volume of marketing assets, or ship a recorded curriculum. Get the model wrong and you will underprice, over-deliver, and resent the work. You can start from professional experience with no packaged offer yet. You should not start by copying your employer’s clients. Check contracts. Billed in GBP. Founder-led. We do not give tax advice.
A consultancy is an offer, not a job title
‘Strategy consultant’ tells the market nothing. We name the client, the problem and the package — then we build the business that can sell it.
You can start without a consultancy idea
Experience is enough to begin. We develop the direction if you do not have one. Income ambitions remain targets, not guarantees.
Starting a consultancy as an offer, not as an independent job title
‘I am a consultant now’ tells the market nothing. Name the client type, the problem, the package, and the price. A finance operations consultancy for 20–80 person professional firms is a business. ‘Helping businesses grow’ is a shrug. We write the former into the Opportunity Decision Brief. We challenge the latter until it is specific or we recommend you do not launch it. Specificity is how a one-person consultancy takes work without a business-development department.
Day-rate thinking keeps you in employment with worse benefits. Outcome packages and retainers with a boundary are how a consultancy becomes extra income you can schedule. If the only honest model is filling a seat like a contractor, say so and price it as such — or pick a different vehicle. IR35 and tax wrappers are for your accountant. We build the commercial offer. We do not determine your status.
Who hires a new consultancy — and who will not
Buyers hire proof and risk reduction. Your former employer’s brand is not yours. Case-shaped stories from work you are allowed to describe, a clear process, and a professional site that can take an enquiry matter more than a stock photo of a meeting table. Procurement in large corporates is usually the wrong first market. Smaller organisations and owner-managers who can decide quickly are often the reachable first clients. We design for a first client, not for a fantasy account list.
Warm introductions help. They are not a strategy on their own. The site still has to explain the offer to a stranger. Typically four to six weeks to build that presence once you approve the direction. You operate after launch. We are not your analysts and we do not sit in on client work. Extra income from a consultancy is a serious aim. It is not a promised book of business.
Consultancy versus coaching, agency and course — pick the delivery model
If the buyer wants behaviour change and accountability sessions, that is coaching. If they want campaigns, creative or production on a retainer, that is an agency. If they want to learn asynchronously, that is a course. Consultancy is counsel and structured problem-solving. Mixing all four on one homepage is how nothing converts. We pick one primary model for launch. You can add later. Launch is not a museum of services you might one day offer.
Hours still govern. A consultancy that only works as a four-day-week on-site engagement will not survive beside a job. We scope remote, packaged, and bounded work you can deliver in the diary you have. UK extra-income consultancies are often evening and Friday vehicles at first. Buyers still expect professionalism. They do not pay less because you have a day job. The site must not look like a hobby. PI insurance, contracts and formation remain yours. We are not your law firm.
Building the consultancy so a client can actually instruct you
When the offer holds, we build brand, website, enquiry or payment journey, and the operating basics. Joshua works with you. The £295 credits toward £2,495 if you continue within 14 days. Seven-day cooling-off before the session. No lock-in. If the positioning is weak, we say so and you keep the brief. A stop is cheaper than a generic ‘advisory’ site your old colleagues will not share. Mixing coaching, agency and course labels on a consultancy homepage is how nothing instructs.
Formation, PI insurance, contracts and tax remain yours and your advisers’. We can explain practical setup at a high level. We are not a law firm or an accountant. The commercial vehicle is what we deliver. You run the practice. Income figures remain ambitions. A brochure that says strategy is not a consultancy. A named client and problem might be. After building the consultancy so a client can actually instruct you, the artefact is the Opportunity Decision Brief: go, redirect or stop, with no lock-in to the £2,495 build.
Who this is for
- Professionals considering independent consulting
- Specialists who are credible in a domain but have never packaged it
What you leave with
A narrow consultancy offer a defined client can instruct — then a professional site and journey if you continue, not a job title with a brochure.
One-to-one with the founder. Start with an idea — or with none. Typically 4–6 weeks after direction is approved. Income goals are ambitions, not guarantees. We help you build a credible business ready to reach customers—not promise specific earnings.
Common questions
Do I need years of freelance work before I start a consultancy?
No. You need a specific client, problem and package you can deliver. Experience inside an employer can be enough if you are allowed to use it. We package that. We do not guarantee clients. Check contracts separately. On start a consultancy, extra income remains an ambition, not a figure we will attach to this answer.
Is a consultancy the same as contracting?
No. Contracting often fills a seat. A consultancy sells a scoped outcome to a client who stays in their own organisation. Pricing and positioning should reflect that. Tax status is for your accountant, not for this service. You run the practice after launch. We do not sit in on client work as unpaid analysts.
Can I start a consultancy while employed in the UK?
Often, if your contract allows it and you are not taking the employer’s work. We scope hours and boundaries. Legal advice stays with you. The Launch Plan is £295; the build is £2,495 credited if you continue within 14 days.
